Fave albums of 2010 - #1

With 1 day left in 2010, it's time to count down my 10 favourite albums of the year. Please keep in mind, this is not intended to be a "best of" list. These are the albums that impressed me the most and that got regular play on my iPhone. Check back every day at 6 PM ET for to see who made my playlist.

1. KANYE WEST - MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY

Surprise, surprise, Kanye tops my list. But, can you blame me? This guy took a really crappy couple of years and produced some of the most exciting and fresh music of the year.

The best thing about Kanye is that his music appeals to a wider audience than just hip hop heads. I mean, I'm the best example of that. He pulls samples from King Crimson one minute, and collaborates with indie artist Bon Iver the next. And, at the heart if it all, are his really clever lyrics and wordplay.

And when you have guest artists that are as diverse as Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Jay-Z, John Legend and Elton John, you can’t help but call this album his masterpiece.

2. ROBYN - BODY TALK

You can’t deny this was the year Robyn took flight (get it?).

Her ambitious Body Talk project, which consisted of 3 EP releases throughout the year, yielded some of the best and inventive music this year, proving that pop music can be smart as well.

Plus, the triple whammy of her singles “Dancing On My Own”, “Hang With Me” and “Indestructible” kinda mirrored my love life this year, so thanks for that, Robyn! Good thing it wasn't the other way around.

The year in pop music

It seems that DJ Earworm is making a bit of a New Year's tradition by releasing amazing mega mash-ups of the year's biggest pop hits. And this year, he doesn't disappoint.

Relive some of the biggest chart movers in one fun and easily-digestible track, including hits from Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Taio Cruz, Enrique, Eminem, Gaga and many many more. So well done!

3. ELLIE GOULDING - LIGHTS

You probably haven’t heard of Ellie Goulding, but trust me when I say you need to listen to her. She is a brilliant songwriter with a knack for making dramatic electro-pop music that’s perfect for Sunday mornings.

Her sweet voice hides brilliant lyrics about love, loss and heartbreak. And the music is dramatic pop music that perfectly matches her stormy lyrics. Ellie’s got brains to match her beauty.

Fave albums of 2010 - #4

With 4 days left in 2010, it's time to count down my 10 favourite albums of the year. Please keep in mind, this is not intended to be a "best of" list. These are the albums that impressed me the most and that got regular play on my iPhone. Check back every day at 6 PM ET for to see who made my playlist.

4. ARCADE FIRE - THE SUBURBS

Now that they’ve conquered the music world, it seems Win Butler and company have to deal with being musical “grown-ups”. Using the idea of growing up and moving to the suburbs as a metaphor for their success, there’s the constant theme of adjusting to the next phase of their lives and careers, while reminiscing about their youth ("We Used To Wait") or realizing how misguiding today's youth is ("Rococo")

Yet, it’s not as depressing as it sounds. There’s a nugget of optimism buried deep in their lyrics as they look forward to bigger and better things.

Fave albums of 2010 - #5

With 5 days left in 2010, it's time to count down my 10 favourite albums of the year. Please keep in mind, this is not intended to be a "best of" list. These are the albums that impressed me the most and that got regular play on my iPhone. Check back every day at 6 PM ET for to see who made my playlist.

5. MARK RONSON & THE BUSINESS INTL. - RECORD COLLECTION

My only qualm about this album is that it didn’t come out earlier in the year cuz this would have been my summer soundtrack. 60s rock, French electro, new Disco...it's all here.

DJ and producer extraordinaire, Mark serves up a collection of tracks that’s probably as eclectic as his own personal record collection, with just as many guests, including Boy frickin George!!! Amazing!

6. DAN BLACK - (UN)

This British lad got some attention for sampling Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” and then getting in trouble by Biggie’s people. It’s all good though because I probably wouldn’t have heard of him otherwise. The incident forced him to rework his lyrics and create his first proper single "Symphonies", which later got a remix featuring Kid Cudi.

Dan fuses elements of electronic music, hip hop, alternative and punk to make a sound that’s completely his own. And his music videos are simply eye candy. Sure, his voice might be a bit nasally for some, but I think that’s part of his charm. That and his awkward dancing.

Fave albums of 2010 - #7

With 7 days left in 2010, it's time to count down my 10 favourite albums of the year. Please keep in mind, this is not intended to be a "best of" list. These are the albums that impressed me the most and that got regular play on my iPhone. Check back every day at 6 PM ET for to see who made my playlist.

7. KELE - THE BOXER

When an artist goes solo, it makes me nervous. Especially when it’s someone I love, like Kele Okereke from Bloc Party. When I heard the first single, “Tenderoni” of his solo release The Boxer, I hated it. It was way to Euro dance for my liking. However, after hearing rave reviews from friends, I bought the album and quickly changed my tune.

Kele takes the electronic sounds used on Bloc Party’s last album Intimacy and takes them to the extreme. You've got military percussion on "Walk Tall", dance club anthems like "Rise" and classic indie rock sounds like "Unholy Thoughts". And at the centre of the sonic storm is Kele's heartbreaking voice. Perfection.

Fave albums of 2010 - #8

With 8 days left in 2010, it's time to count down my 10 favourite albums of the year. Please keep in mind, this is not intended to be a "best of" list. These are the albums that impressed me the most and that got regular play on my iPhone. Check back every day at 6 PM ET for to see who made my playlist.

8. SCISSOR SISTERS - NIGHT WORK

After the big success of their first album, Scissor Sisters kind of faltered with their follow-up Ta-Dah! It's the typical sophomore slump that happens when record labels rush an act to release new material quickly to strike while the iron is hot.

Fortunately, they took their time for Night Work and it paid off. If you’re a fan of anything 80s, Night Work is for you. Aside from the play-it-safe lead single "Fire With Fire", the campy glam-rock band make a solid return to the music scene with razor-sharp lyrics, infectious beats and stellar vocals. And bonus points for a guest monologue by Sir Ian McKellen on “Invisible Light”.

Yeah, these guys don’t believe in the world “understated”.

Fave albums of 2010 - #9

With 9 days left in 2010, it's time to count down my 10 favourite albums of the year. Please keep in mind, this is not intended to be a "best of" list. These are the albums that impressed me the most and that got regular play on my iPhone. Check back every day at 6 PM ET for to see who made my playlist.

9. KYLIE MINOGUE - APHRODITE

The pop diva has been in the business for over 20 years, but aside from her smash hit Fever back in 2001, she’s failed to get any loving from North America. Aprhodite, her 11th studio album, is a fine return to form. Not only is it her most cohesive album since Fever, but it’s a non-stop dance party featuring 12 tracks about all the warm and fuzzy feelings that come from being in love.

From the slow whisper of "All The Lovers" to the urgency of "Closer" to the euphoric bliss of "Too Much" (which completes the trilogy of "Love At First Sight" and "Wow"), it's just an feel-good album.
