For Lex, Cass & Riss - little girls growing into little women.
Meet Birdy. She’s a gifted singer and pianist, that kind of reminds me of Adele. She’s got a great taste in music. And she’s only 14 years old.
Yeah, I was blown away by her age, too. That’s right, Birdy, which is the stage name of Jasmine Van den Bogaerde, is younger than Bieber, but somehow is making music that is more mature than most of the music I hear today.
Jasmine first gave her homeland of England a taste of her talent when she won a talent contest called Open Mic UK. She was only 12 at the time and performed an original song called “Be Free”. Since then, she was promptly snatched up by Warner Music and is now prepping her debut album for release later this year.
In the meantime, she’s released a video for her cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love”. The gorgeous piano ballad follows Birdy as she moves around an abandoned house, complete with layers of dust and dead insects.
Yeah, it’s pretty depressing stuff. But it’s also really, really well-crafted. Check out her video below.
Ever since Lady Gaga released her latest single, "Born This Way", my friend Kevin has strongly stated that it sounds like a country song put through a disco processor.
He can rest assured that he is completely right because Lady Gaga has randomly released a "country road" version of the hit, validating his claims.
This isn't just your average remix. Gaga re-recorded the vocals and all for this track. And, it works in a campy way.
But, somehow I don't think she's going to win over any Bible Belt fans. So, why did she feel the need to release this version?
By removing all the techno beats, is she trying to prove that the song has a sturdy foundation? Trying to remove the endless comparisons to TLC and Madonna?
I remember when I first saw Gaga's blues-y acoustic take on "Poker Face", which was just as random, but proved to me that she's actually a talented musician. This feels like it's trying to do the same thing...but why? We already know she's talented.
Maybe she's just having some fun.
Either way, bust out your rhinestone-studded cowboy hat (I know you have one) and let's start the hoedown!
It's not hard to compare Natalia Kills to Lady Gaga. Not only do they share the same label, but they both share an artistic vision that's bigger than just music and have a great appreciation for fashion. Plus, Natalia's single "Mirrors" does sound very Gaga, though I've been stressing for months now that, after listening to other songs, she doesn't sound like Lady Gaga at all.
But, if you're going to model your career after anyone, Lady Gaga is as good a role model to have as any.
Remember when Lady Gaga first came out, and after she got the buzz going, she did an acoustic version of "Poker Face" and "Paparazzi"? That was when people started seeing her more as a talented musician, not just a flash-in-the-pan popstar.
Well, Natalia has kind of gone the similar route, performing an acoustic set of "Mirrors" and showcases her stellar voice.
I'm going to keep saying this till people listen to me - Natalia Kills is going to make it big this year!
Wow.
After listening to a couple of tracks by Daughter (real name: Elena Tonra), I'm just blown away.
The 19-year-old from London, England breaks my heart with her gorgeous story-telling, beautiful voice and melancholic guitar plucking. She's truly someone who's talented beyond her years and will hopefully get lots of recognition in 2011.
If you're a fan of the movie Once, you'll love her. Check out her live acoustic take of "Peter" below, and if you like, you can download her Demo EP for FREE here!
