Björk is crystal clear
YES!
Björk's new single, "Crystalline", from her upcoming seventh album Biophilia, is a fine return to form.
I love Björk because she fearlessly experiments with sound. From the nearly all-vocal album Medulla, to her foray into tribal-new age fusion on Volta, she's definitely pushed the boundaries of audience expectations. Sometimes, the result was fascinating (Medulla), while other times it's a bit forgettable (Volta... Timbaland, is there anyone you can't ruin?)
Based on the lead single, it seems that Björk has returned to more familiar territory. That is, the excellent period of Homogenic and Vespertine.
"Crystalline" starts off with ramped up xylophones before a stilted electro beat, that is signature Björk, joins in. And, just when you think that's all you get, the last 45 seconds unleashes a jungle beat rhythm that is at once completely unexpected, but entirely welcome.
Biophilia, which is touted as an "app album" with each song packaged with a unique app, overseen by the visionary Michel Gondry, doesn't drop till September. So, this summer suddenly feels a whole lot longer.
