Leave it up to Robyn to save a particularly boring and annoying Coldplay song.
She did a live cover of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" at Radio 1 Live Lounge and, wow! She saved that song! Sparkling synths and a gradually building drumline almost makes me wish this was her orignal song, but somehow, this song sounds like it belongs to her.
So, what happens when you release a tired, clichéd song as a lead single for your upcoming album?
You make a tired, clichéd video that rips off visual ideas that have been done before by cooler, younger bands - including yourself when you were younger and cooler.
Check out "Strawberry Swing" "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" by Coldplay.
Parlophone Records: "Chris, we need to talk about your music."
Chris Martin: "I know, it's great, right? Bono who?"
PR: "No, your music is fucking depressing. You need to change it if you want to make any money."
CM: "What do you mean? Depressing music is our bread and butter! Everyone loves a good sappy cry. That's our thing."
PR: "Well, not anymore. All your fans have gotten so depressed that they offed themselves. So, good job."
CM: "Aw, Christ. Well, what should we do? What kind of music is big these days?"
PR: "Look at Ke$ha, Britney... even Katy Perry! They're at the top of the charts and it's because they're all singing about the same thing. Listening to music and having a good time."
CM: "Hmm...I think I can work with that. Perhaps I can write a rolicking waltz! That 3/4 time always gets the party going."
PR: "NO! You daft idiot. Fuck the piano! You need a beat. And some vocal effects. No one cares about musical virtuosity and lyrics these days. Just write down some gibberish about your favourite song and let the band do all the heavy lifting."
CM: "Are you sure about this?"
PR: Yes. It'll be gangbusters!"
[End Scene]
And so we have the lame new single from Coldplay, "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall".
Coldplay released a new song and video for the holidays called "Christmas Lights".
Before you roll your eyes at another Christmas song, I suggest you listen to it. It's not so much a Christmas song, as a love song that's set during Christmas. And it sounds like a Coldplay song. Not a Christmas song. I'm surprised they resisted the urge to not and jingling bells to the track!
And the video is just a whimsical as most Coldplay videos. It looks like it was shot in one take and seems to be a simple video. Then, the floating Elvises come along. Then there are helium balloons and fireworks galore. It kind of appeals to the kid in me.
Check it out! Best served with a cup of hot chocolate.
