Leave it up to Robyn to save a particularly boring and annoying Coldplay song.
She did a live cover of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" at Radio 1 Live Lounge and, wow! She saved that song! Sparkling synths and a gradually building drumline almost makes me wish this was her orignal song, but somehow, this song sounds like it belongs to her.
I'll be honest. When I first saw that Linkin Park did a live cover of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep", my first thought was "It's official. That song has jumped the shark."
But, I was actually suprised to hear Chester do such a great job at singing the song! They didn't butch it up with heavy guitars or anything. It was just him and piano, kept really simple.
What's even more surprising is that if you did a Venn diagram of Linkin Park fans and Adele fans, there seems to be a big overlap! Who knew?
FreddeGedde posted an amazing cover of Queen's hit song "Killer Queen". You MUST watch it.
I mean, it starts off with just him and you think it's going to be an a cappella cover. Then, he "clones" himself 6 times, so suddenly he's doing a sweet 7-part harmony to the song.
And if that isn't impressive enough, various clones bust out a keyboard, two guitars, bongos, a recorder and an accordian. Taking this cover from "pretty cool" to "friggin' awesome" just like that.
YouTube musicians Alex Goot, Michael Henry and Justin Robinett teamed up to produce a medley of "Rolling In The Deep", "Someone Like You", and "Turning Tables".
It sounds like Adele giving the Rascall Flatts treatment, but I kinda dig it.
Musically, the harmonies and layering are excellent. And, even though it sounds a bit boy-band-ish, I gotta give them props.
I'm well aware that I'm a musical contradiction. I profess to love indie rock, but my all-time favourite artist is Madonna, the most mainstream bitch on the block. It doesn't make the most sense, but that's me.
And now my conflicting music tastes have been reconciled.
Indie lable Paper Bag Records have released a tribute cover album dedicated to Madonna's True Blue album. All nine songs have been covered by a roster of artists from the Paper Bag label, including You Say Party, The Rural Alberta Advantage and Winter Gloves. And each song has been giving a complete makeover.
"Open Your Heart" by Young Galaxy is now a minimalist head bobber. "Jimmy Jimmy" by Born Ruffians is now a cool rock shuffle. And PS I Love You's chaotic take on "Where's The Party?" (embedded below) renders the song almost unrecognizable from the original 80s synth thumper. Somebody find this guy a party!
The best part is? It's all free if you go here. And you can preview all of the tracks on Soundcloud.
So, suddenly, Madonna has been made cool again in the eyes of hipsters everywhere.
It's been well documented that I can't stand this whole singing kick Gwyneth Paltrow has been on. Her little country music movie that bombed as far as I can figure, her inexplicable performance with Cee-Lo at the Grammys and her never-ending stint on Glee. It's all too much.
So, you can imagine how unimpressed I was to hear that she was going to cover Adele on the musical TV phenomenon. No one should touch Adele other than Adele.
But, when I begrudgingly pressed play on the link below, something happened. Gwyenth actually does a decent job with "Turning Tables." While her voice doesn't carry the soul that Adele does, she actually does a more than competant job with it.
And, since I always believe in giving credit where credit is due, I have to give props to Ms. Paltrow for not fucking it up.
So, Sugarland and Little Big Town covered Madonna' "Like A Prayer" at a recent concert, and they reworked it as a soulful country song.
I have to hand it to them, they did a pretty good job. And I would think M wouldn't mind, since she did the whole disco cowboy thing a while back and has a penchant for playing guitar.
My only concerns is this will only put more ideas in Madonna's head to play more guitar driven songs when all we want to do is dance. If that happens, we know who to hold accountable.
