Fave Albums of 2011: #10 - Talk That Talk by Rihanna

Media_http2bpblogspot_ifvzx

While Britney Spears is something akin to a blank canvas that producers and stylists paint to suit the needs of their songs, Rihanna is more like molding clay that resists, yields and gives in to her crafters, allowing to actually become what the songs represent.

Plus, she’s got way more personality than dead-eyed Britney.

However, one of my biggest complaints about RiRi is that her albums start off strong, then quickly goes off the rails, jumping tracks from genre to genre and losing steam. I didn’t even bother with her album Loud, because each single was vastly different from the previous one and, frankly, I didn’t like any of them.

With Talk That Talk, Rihanna finally finds more cohesion. All the songs boast a swagger that, fortunately for her, translates from four-on-the-floor house tracks like “We Found Love” and “Where Have You Been” to more reggae and hip hop inspired tracks, like “Talk That Talk” and “Cockiness (I Love It)”.

She even pulls off an impressive sample of The XX’s “Intro” for “Drunk On Love”.

While I could do without the ballads and while I’ll never understand why “Birthday Cake” is only half a song (is it supposed to be an interlude?), I have to recognize that this is Rihanna’s strongest album to date.

LMFAO wiggle their junk

As ridiculous and hilarious as LMFAO's new single "Sexy and I Know It" is, I think it's absolutely brilliant.

After decades of music videos showing women's breasts and asses jiggling around in barely nothing, the dance group strip down to their skivvies and shake their junk in this anthem to guys looking good.

This might be my new Friday night pre-party song!

Producer overload!

Remember when Timbaland was all the rage? I do. And while the rest of the world seems to have moved on from his hype, looks like he hasn't.

Good thing he's enlisted the talents of two music producer that are, like, so totally hot right now -Pitbull and David Guetta - to help kick off the first single from his upcoming album Shock Value III.

Wow - three big time producers all on one track. And yet, somehow the song sounds like everything else out there. Oh yeah, that's because these are 3 of the 5 producers who everyone seems to be working with these days.

That's one way to get over a divorce

Recent divorcée Jennifer Lopez has found a novel way to help her broken heart and bruised ego. Make music video where every man in the city is chasing you for your affection!

I have to admit, I think this video is pretty funny and cute. But, I have one question: If the mystical concierge from the West Indies only meant for the cookies to be eating in a small bite, why did she make them so damn big? If I were J-Lo, I'd have scarfed down the whole thing.

(But, my resulting video would have been much more x-rated.)

Lights keeps us on our toes

Canadian electro-pop singer Lights is prepping the release of her second-album Siberia.

The lead single "Toes" sounds a bit darker, as she sings about an unpredictable lover keeping her on her to-oh-wo-oh-oh-oh-woes.

Too bad the video does little to keep us on our toes. Lights is just walking around Toronto, looking pretty.

Granted, all her videos are minimalistic, but I kinda like that she had a quirky, artsy gimmick in them, be it cardboard backdrops or buckets of paint.

I guess the point is to focus on the song. And damn, it's a great song.

David Guetta is ridiculous

David Guetta has released another generic dance track, "Little Bad Girl", this time with the help of Taio Cruz and Ludacris.

I knew I was going to be in for a treat when Taio's auto-tuned voice pronounced "air" and "there" "err" and "therr" in the first verse.

But, I was not expecting the hilarious scene where, as the sun starts to rise, David and his party people run outside and literally skid the world to a halt. That's right, the earth spins backwards, slipping the world back into darkness, allowing the party to continue.

First of all, usually when people are partying non-stop, that means they're on some kind of drug, which means they're in a building that likely already has the windows blacked out. So, the whole earth-stopping thing? Uneccessary.

Secondly, I like how the people who were waking up, ready to start their day, see the sun go back down and just shrug their shoulders. Talk about unrealistic! In this day and age of earthquakes, hurricanes and raptures, I'd run for the hills! Not go back to bed!

Ugh.

Marina and the Diamonds go Radioactive

Marina and the Diamonds broke out in 2010 with The Family Jewels, which featured a fun pop sound that fused retro soul with quirky indie pop sounds, like Florence + The Machine.

But, their new song “Radioactive” is taking a very different direction.

Produced by Stargate, who worked with Beyoncé, Rihanna and Katy Perry, the one-off single is a straight-up dance track.

At first, I was a little worried to hear that Marina and her band were going in this direction. After all, their unique sound is part of what got them the critical attention they deserved.

But, the track is actually pretty solid and probably a smart move. After all, they can only stay in that vein for so long before it sounds stale and working with such a big name producer might help get them a bigger crowd in North America.
