Dev creeps us out in the dark

I've been waiting for Dev's new video for "In The Dark" forever! And it's finally here!

The video is pretty artistic for her. She's surrounded by arms painted black, holding her naughty bits and reaching out for her in a stark white room.

She also, playfully, takes the whole "In The Dark" motif literally, showing snakes (eek!), spiders and some kind of shrouded demon; all sorts of things that would creep you out in the dark.

Check it out and get your dance on!

Dev cranks the heat

I know a lot of people are pretty dismissive of Dev and her pals the Cataracs. They say she's a one-trick pony who just poses and sing-talks.

I don't know why, but I keep rooting for them. It's been a while since I've seen such naked drive and ambition behind up-and-coming popstars. I also think the as a production team, the Cataracs have found a magic formula for making music that sounds unique, but is still representative of the mainstream sound du jour. And, while Dev does do a lot of sing-talking, she does sing a bit and she sounds decent compared to some bigger name stars. Maybe I just like rooting for the underdogs.

Well, it seems that they're gearing up for further music domination. All this time, I've been waiting for a video for "In The Dark", and all of a sudden there's this video for "Fireball", a bass heavy track that boasts about her swag.

The video find Dev and the Cataracs making a robbery getaway on bikes - how hipster! - before she gets to a bridge and sets the money on fire and throws it off. You might think that's pointless. But, I think the point is to do it because she can. I mean, she's literally got money to burn.

Either that, or The Joker is her idol. "Everything burns."

New Boyz wanna kick it in the Backseat

The Cataracs and Dev are everywhere these days. So, if you want a hit, they'd be the people to go to for production, right?

That's what hip hop duo New Boyz must have been thinking for their new single "Backseat", off their upcoming sophmore album Too Cool To Care

It's your typical raunchy dance-influence hip hop track with a great hook sung by Dev. Which means it might have some legs as a summer club hit.

The song also reminds me of one my fave t-shirts that reads "Because you deserve better than the backseat of my car". Oh, 21st century romance.

The Cataracs are going to the top of the world

After the Cataracs have helped propel Dev to stardom by bouncing her booty bounce and taking the bass down low, it's only fair that she helps them out now that it's their turn to shine.

"Top of the World" carries on the sexy party times, with the guys playing cops who are called to bust a party up. It turns out to be a sexy pseudo-lesbian party (why don't I ever get invited to those?) and these guys can't resist joining in on all the fun.

It looks like The Cataracs and Dev are continuing their quest for global dance domination. And I don't mind, cuz they seem like a really chill crew that know how to par-tay. Plus, Cyrano is super cute!!! MMMM! I'd get my bass down low with him!

Dev calls out Far East Movement

Far East Movement had a monster hit with their track "Like A G6". But their follow up song "Rocketeer", in my opinion, is a bit of a let down.

Which draws attention to why is "Like A G6" such a solid party jam. The answer is two-fold. First, the hook of "G6" is a sample of Dev's song "Booty Bounce" which I blogged about a while back and LOVE!

Secondly, "G6" is produced by The Cataracs, a hip hop duo from Berkely, California. And when you hear Dev's latest single "Bass Down Low", which is also produced by the Cataracs, you'll quickly learn that Dev and the Cataracs are the real deal, not Far East Movement.

Yeah, I said it.

It just goes to show that these days, it doesn't matter who sings the song. It's all about the production behind it. And the team up of Dev and The Cataracs is bound to leave Far East Movement behind as a one-hit wonder.
