Ellie Goulding left me starry-eyed
That dream was realized last night, when the coy folktronica singer came to the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto.
My friend April and I were ecstatic about seeing Ellie live, as we had heard nothing but amazing things. We were actually quite bummed out because Ellie's original venue at the Great Hall had sold out in minutes. I guess the demand to see her was so great that they changed the venue to the much larger Pheonix and April and I scored.
First of all, can we talk abotu the opening act, The Knocks? They blew my mind! The electronic duo from New York were playing their own dance tracks, but they also spun an impressive DJ mashup set, while playing along with live drums and keys. I had never seen anything like it and they really knew how to work the crowd. I'll blog more about then in a future post.
After their set, Ellie took the stage, flanked by her very attractive band.
As she opened with "Under The Sheets", she started playing the snare drum and I knew this was going to be a musical treat because the whole band seemed to be multi-instrumentalists. Ellie was singing, playing drums and acoustic guitar. The bass guitar player was also adept at the piano and keys. And the keyboard and loop programmer took a turn with some percussion. When I see bands who have a genuine love for music, it makes the concert experience that much more amazing.
Dressed in a cirucs-style coat with a sleevless t-shirt, short short and polka dot tights, Ellie was quite the charmer, comfortably speaking to the crowd without any visible nerves - impressive for a relatively new singer. Her voice was strong, accent was endearing and dance moves were sexy.
She played most of the songs from her debut album Lights, including her cover of Elton John's "Your Song", which I recorded and embedded below.
I've been saying this for a year and I'll keep saying it till I'm blue in the face: Ellie Goulding is one to watch and you really should get on board, because she's on her way to bigger and better things.
