Fave Albums of 2011: #7 - Oh Land by Oh Land

Media_httpcdnidolator_eggwy

One look at Nanna Øland Fabricius’, AKA Oh Land’s, statuesque blonde figure, and you’d easily mistake her for just another disposable European pop star.

But, it seems this beauty has talent too. The Danish musician, who now lives in Brooklyn, NY, has actually forged a nice little niche for her brand of eclectic indie-pop, which is further showcased on her sophomore self-titled release.

No doubt, you’ve heard her lead single “Sun of a Gun” on Gossip Girl or in some trendy commercial. This bouncy pop song picks up the slack left behind by Feist, and is revisited on tracks like “White Nights” and “We Turn It Up”.

But, it is when she slows it down where we have some gorgeous musical moments. “Perfection”, “Lean” and “Wolf & I” are breathtaking and lush.

Fave Albums of 2011: #8 - Cerimonials by Florence + the Machine

I think the reason I took a while to get into Florence + the Machine’s debut album Lungs is because I didn’t really like the singles “Dog Days Are Over” and “You Got The Love”. It was too stage show for me.

However, I ignored those songs and found that the bulk of her songs have a more darker, tribal sound that’s more to my liking.

Thankfully, she continues to delve into her dark side even more for her new album Ceremonials. Florence even coined the term “chamber soul” – a fusion of chamber pop and soul music – to describe the bigger and darker sound.

Ceremonials is haunting, violent, scary and hopeful, a careful examination on the negative outcomes of love and romance.

Under the Radar: Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Ray, real name Lizzy Grant, describes her style as a "gangsta Nancy Sinatra". That should have been an instant turn-off.

But, after listening to her two singles "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans", you know what? She's right!

Her melancholy retro-blues sound, her puffy hairdo, her grainy self-directed music videos and her smoky Stevie Nicks voice, this 24-year-old singer is the musical equivalent of The Virgin Suicides and Valley of the Dolls. She's my new obsession

Florence + the Machine return in all their glory

Sidebar: I was very late on the Florence + the Machine train. I'm not sure why. Despite everyone telling me to check them out, the snippets I would hear on car stereos sounded noisy.

Then, "Cosmic Love" came along and opened my ears. I was converted and haven't looked back since.

Anyway, still riding high on the slow-building success of Lungs, Florence Welch and company are prepping their second album for its November release. The first single and video has dropped for "What The Water Gave Me" and it is amazing!

It's got a more of a raw, 70s rock feeling to it, in my opinion, while still sounding like definate Machine material.

And to match the stripped down production, we have a video that is shot in studio and it looks like it was a pretty rockin' time.

I can't wait for this album!

Sock puppets for the win!

What's cool: The National have recorded a song "Exile, Vilify" exclusivly for the video game Portal 2

What's cooler: Portal 2 held a contest to make a music video for the song.

What's the coolest: The winning video features the saddest, and cutest, sock puppet ever! Don't you just wanna hug him?

Oh Land goes for whimsy - and my heart - in her new video

One of my favourite signers, Oh Land, has really outdone herself with her new video for "White Nights".

One of the standout tracks from her solid debut, "White Nights" is a lovely song about dreams and fantasies. So, of course, the crafty Oh Land would film a video with elaborate costumes, sets and choreography to go along with it.

It seems like Oh Land has some pretty rad dreams. From swimming with glitter-covered girls to dancing in weird animal costumes and with rejected Black Eyed Peas dancers, she's got some pretty fun imaginings.

And am I the only one who thinks she looks like January Jones with her short hair?

OK Go have gone and done it again

OK Go have become renowned for their music videos. And just when you think they can't come up with a new gimmick, they do, and it rocks.

I mean, kaleidescopic effects are one thing. Tightly chorographed dance sequences are another. But, when you meld the two together, it becomes something incredible.

Honestly, the video is just plain mesmerizing. And, just when you think there's nothing more to it, they start spelling messages with their feet.

Sure, it looks a little Human Centipede at times, but it's definitely worth watching. Also, play with the fun interactive version here!

Best Coast bring on the waterworks

California indie darlings Best Coast seem to have a lot friends in high places.

I mean, their latest video for "Mexican Summer" is directed by Drew Barrymore, of all people. And it's a great video, too!

Reminiscent of West Side Story, the video stars Chloë Grace Moretz (from Kick Ass), Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly), Donald Glover (Community), Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf) and Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) as rival gangs. Obviously, two rivals fall in love and it just takes a turn for the tragic.

Watch the entire video, please. It's like a short film. And I got misty-eyed at the ending.

Foster the People get beat up by kids

One of my fave new bands, Foster The People, have unleased their second video for the great track, "Helena Beat".

The uptempo groovy single begins with images of war and destruction, establishing the setting of the video as, yet another, post-apocalyptic world. The three (cute as ever) guys from the band are kidnapped and tortured by a gang of feral children. It's reminiscent of Lord of the Flies and Mad Max. With a pretty cool ending.

Take a look and, if you haven't already, I implore you to pick up their debut album Torches. It's phenomenal.
