Fave Albums of 2011: #3 - Watch The Throne by Jay-Z & Kanye West

Media_httpwwwvmancomw_dbkmu

Theoretically, there was so much that could go wrong with Watch The Throne, the huge hip hop collaboration that united Jay-Z and Kanye West. I mean, two huge egos releasing an album of “luxury rap” that boasts about ‘mo money, ‘mo problems in the wake of a huge global economic crisis? On paper, that sounds pretentious and a surefire failure.

But, then again, we are talking about Jay-Z and Kanye: two of the biggest and most creative minds in hip hop today with a bromance so strong, the egos actually work together.

And while they are tearing a Maybach apart in their video for “Otis”, and bragging about all their material wealth, there is still a sense of shock on songs like “Niggas in Paris”, almost like “I’m wearing Gucci??? What???” Meanwhile, they also deal with the two-faced haters who are waiting for their downfall on tracks like “Why I Love You”.

But, it’s not all bravado here. There are moments of fragility and uncertainty on “New Day”, a song to their unborn sons, and of perseverance in times of adversity on “Murder to Excellence”.

And for anyone who thinks hip hop can’t be art, take on listen to “H.A.M.”, which features a full symphony and opera singers. It’s a masterpiece designed or the clubs.

Jay-Z and Kanye go for a joyride

If you were two of the biggest names in hip hop with millions at your disposal, what would you do? Well, act like a big kid of course.

That's what Kanye West and Jay-Z are doing in their simple, but fun, video for "Otis", off their excellent collaborative album Watch The Throne.

The two guys seem downright giddy as they trick out a Maybach, take girls on a joyride, and mug in front of fireworks.

I enjoy this video so much, not only because it seems like Jay and 'Ye are having a blast, but also because it kind of goes against the typical hip hop video template. I mean, this video looks like something that would come out from a young rock band, doesn't it?

Check it out! And be sure to check out the album, which is brilliant.

Kanye and Jay-Z go H.A.M.

It's no question that in the world of hip hop, Kanye West and Jay-Z are the most likely candidates for kings of the game. So, it should be no surprise that the two are planning to drop a collaborative album, appropriately titled Watch The Throne, in a matter of months.

Today marked that release of their first single, and thus the litmus test for this collaboration, "H.A.M.", which stands for "hard as a motherfucker".

This song could have gone either way. With two huge names involved, this could have been one big mess of clashing egos. Or they could inspire each other to sound their best.

Thankfully, it was the latter, not former.

The track is all edge. It's an aggressive hip hop anthem, complete with the bravado you'd come to expect from these guys, this time in the form of a dramatic opera sampled in the chorus.

Simply put, this track is fire. And I can't wait to hear what else these two have up their sleeves.

Kanye's Monster is unleashed

Hot damn!

The highly anticipated video for "Monster" by Kanye West has leaked. And it's an epic one.

Featuring Rick Ross, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and (an unseen) Bon Iver, the video is filled with zombies, ghouls, corpses and dismembered body parts. It's quite graphic, yet also very stunning to watch.

It does remind me a bit of Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" video, but Kanye takes it to a whole new level.

I have to give props to Nicki. Not only does she steal the song, but she also steals the video with the best scene.

Anyway, check it out...if it hasn't been pulled already.

The year in pop music

It seems that DJ Earworm is making a bit of a New Year's tradition by releasing amazing mega mash-ups of the year's biggest pop hits. And this year, he doesn't disappoint.

Relive some of the biggest chart movers in one fun and easily-digestible track, including hits from Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Taio Cruz, Enrique, Eminem, Gaga and many many more. So well done!

Kanye West is a monster

Awwwwwww shit!

"Monster" is my favourite track from Kanye's amazing new album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and I'm stoked that it's going to be released as the new single.

A preview for the video, which also features Rick Ross, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and Bon Iver, was released today and the video looks amazing. Lots of dead girls, scary faces and Nicki's big ass.

I can't wait for the full video.

Kanye West is living up to his own hype

I've said it before, and I'm saying it again. Kanye maybe have delusions of grandeur and a huge Messianic complex, but he lives up to his own hype.

At work, we previewed his upcoming album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and I've honestly never been so impressed and excited about a release this year.

Kanye has somehow managed to blur the lines between hip hop, rock, electro, prog, R&B and even classical music and the result is his masterpiece.

His production is top notch, as is his wordplay. It becomes quickly evident that, when it comes to art, the man knows what he's talking about.

Check out his surprise appearance at the Rolling Stone offices where he gives some sort of impromptu lecture that talks about how he is inspired by his own excitement, then switches to Renaissance artist Raphael.

Pretty impressive, right? And it seems that critics for far agree. Entertainment Weekly gave it an A, while Rolling Stone gave it a whopping 5-star review.

And if you need further proof, check out my fave track so far "Monster". I dare you to not get pumped up during this song, which features Bon Iver, Rick Ross, Jay-Z and Nikki Minaj. Plus, this track is where I finally understood the hype around Nikki. Her verse steals the show. (Language NSFW)
