Fave Albums of 2011: #3 - Watch The Throne by Jay-Z & Kanye West

Theoretically, there was so much that could go wrong with Watch The Throne, the huge hip hop collaboration that united Jay-Z and Kanye West. I mean, two huge egos releasing an album of “luxury rap” that boasts about ‘mo money, ‘mo problems in the wake of a huge global economic crisis? On paper, that sounds pretentious and a surefire failure.

But, then again, we are talking about Jay-Z and Kanye: two of the biggest and most creative minds in hip hop today with a bromance so strong, the egos actually work together.

And while they are tearing a Maybach apart in their video for “Otis”, and bragging about all their material wealth, there is still a sense of shock on songs like “Niggas in Paris”, almost like “I’m wearing Gucci??? What???” Meanwhile, they also deal with the two-faced haters who are waiting for their downfall on tracks like “Why I Love You”.

But, it’s not all bravado here. There are moments of fragility and uncertainty on “New Day”, a song to their unborn sons, and of perseverance in times of adversity on “Murder to Excellence”.

And for anyone who thinks hip hop can’t be art, take on listen to “H.A.M.”, which features a full symphony and opera singers. It’s a masterpiece designed or the clubs.

Jay-Z and Kanye go for a joyride

If you were two of the biggest names in hip hop with millions at your disposal, what would you do? Well, act like a big kid of course.

That's what Kanye West and Jay-Z are doing in their simple, but fun, video for "Otis", off their excellent collaborative album Watch The Throne.

The two guys seem downright giddy as they trick out a Maybach, take girls on a joyride, and mug in front of fireworks.

I enjoy this video so much, not only because it seems like Jay and 'Ye are having a blast, but also because it kind of goes against the typical hip hop video template. I mean, this video looks like something that would come out from a young rock band, doesn't it?

Check it out! And be sure to check out the album, which is brilliant.

Moby gives Heather Graham another day

Remember when Moby was at his peak and his video for "Natural Blues" kind of made Christina Ricci cool again?

I wonder if that's going to happen for Heather Graham, who plays a sword-weilding angel of mercy - similar to the one Ricci played in "Natural Blues" - in his latest video "The Day" from his upcoming album Destroyed.

The video, and Heather, is gorgeous and seemingly influenced by Kanye West's amazing "moving painting" for "Power".

As for the song, it's a electro-punk reflection on death and regret. All in all, it's breathtaking.

Katy and Kanye are out of this world

After about a month of waiting, Kety Perry's highly anticipated video for "E.T." featuring Kanye West has dropped.

While I still hear T.a.T.u's "All The Things She Said" whenever I hear this song, the video makes up for what that song might lack in originality.

The clip opens with a setting that looks like real version of the futuristic wasteland of Wall-E, before we move to space where Kanye raps in a space shuttle and we see an alien who turns into a shapeshifting Katy Perry. She's searching for something and, I'm guessing through telepathic scanning, she receives images of Earth, where she sets her twirling course.

The video is stunning and, probably thanks to all the makeup and prosthetics, the most beautiful Katy has ever been. Yes, I'm aware that's a backhanded compliment. What?

Plus, the last shot is pretty memorable. Deer legs and bare bottoms. That's all I'm saying.

My only real beef with the video is the random forced product placement at the end. Really? Are the sunglasses necessary?

Also, aliens, space, facial prosthetics, novelty male models (thanks Lauren!)... prepare yourself for the comparisons to Lady Gaga in 3.. 2...

The time they went and ruined a perfectly good song...

So, what do you do if you are one of the few artists who did not take part in a a super collaboration for a massive hit? You can make your own remix!

Well, at least that's what seems to have happened with Lil Wayne, Big Sean and Drake, who released a remix of Kanye's song "All of the Lights", which features everyone from Rihanna to Fergie to Kid Cudi to John Legend to Elton John to La Roux and many many more.

"All of the Lights" is my favourite song from Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, so I feel extra-slighted by this remix. It ruins the song, in my opinion.

Gone is the storyline about a troubled man trying to pull his life together for his daughter. Gone is the sing-along chorus. Gone is the anthemic feeling that happens toward the end.

Instead, we have these three guys basically bragging about their status and wealth and sexual prowess. Way to dumb it down.

Hey, losers, there's probably a reason Kanye didn't put you on the track. And this is why.

Kanye West doesn't care if you are prone to seizures

I don't know whatever happened to this video for Monster, which leaked a while back, but was never officially released. It's a shame, because that song is crazy good.

But, my favourite track on his excellent album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is "All Of The Lights" and he just released the video for it.

Warning - if you're prone to headaches or seizures, don't watch this video.

After starting off with a gorgeous black and white interlude starring the cutest little girl walking to school (was I the only one who was worried something bad would happen to her?), the video becomes a technicolour strobe light.

We have lyrics flashing on the screen in all sorts of different graphics. There's Kanye doing his best Kanye on top of cop cars. We have Rihanna looking the best I've seen her since this whole red hair fiasco. And Kid Cudi makes a quick appearance.

It's a shame that for a song that's so anthemic, that the video seems to fall a little flat. I mean, the song features vocals by Kanye, Rihanna, Kid Cudi, Tony Williams, The-Dream, Charlie Wilson, John Legend, Elly Jackson (La Roux), Alicia Keys, Elton John, Fergie, Ryan Leslie, Drake, Alvin Fields, and Ken Lewis. That's impressive.

And how amazing would it have been to see all of them in the video. I know that's logistically impossible, but it still would have been epic. It would have been the music video to shut down all other music videos.

Oh well, I guess this is better than nothing.

Kanye and Jay-Z go H.A.M.

It's no question that in the world of hip hop, Kanye West and Jay-Z are the most likely candidates for kings of the game. So, it should be no surprise that the two are planning to drop a collaborative album, appropriately titled Watch The Throne, in a matter of months.

Today marked that release of their first single, and thus the litmus test for this collaboration, "H.A.M.", which stands for "hard as a motherfucker".

This song could have gone either way. With two huge names involved, this could have been one big mess of clashing egos. Or they could inspire each other to sound their best.

Thankfully, it was the latter, not former.

The track is all edge. It's an aggressive hip hop anthem, complete with the bravado you'd come to expect from these guys, this time in the form of a dramatic opera sampled in the chorus.

Simply put, this track is fire. And I can't wait to hear what else these two have up their sleeves.
