Down With Webster get the 8-bit treatment

I'm not a huge Down With Webster fan. Let's just get that out of the way. It's no disrespect to them. They make good music and are really kind of a big deal - it's just that most of their fans are 16-year-old girls and, well, I'm not one of them.

Anyway, while I may be indifferent about the band, I'm really loving their new video for "Big Wheels". Finding the boys inside an old Nintendo game cartridge, we see them perfectly recreate scenes from Mario Kart, Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros., among other awesome classic games.

Wow, this video takes me back to my youth!

Lights keeps us on our toes

Canadian electro-pop singer Lights is prepping the release of her second-album Siberia.

The lead single "Toes" sounds a bit darker, as she sings about an unpredictable lover keeping her on her to-oh-wo-oh-oh-oh-woes.

Too bad the video does little to keep us on our toes. Lights is just walking around Toronto, looking pretty.

Granted, all her videos are minimalistic, but I kinda like that she had a quirky, artsy gimmick in them, be it cardboard backdrops or buckets of paint.

I guess the point is to focus on the song. And damn, it's a great song.

Feist goes there

One of the most highly anticipated albums of the year has got to be Feist's Metals.

After a few samples posted on her YouTube page, we now have the first proper song. While I was hoping for the harder sound that was in her first preview, "How Come You Never Go There" serves as a nice reminder of Feist's knack for gorgeous melodies and evocative lyrics.

Think of this as an amuse-bouche to open up your palette, because this promises to be an album that features bolder and stronger sounds from Feist.

Handsome Furs have an orgy

I don't know why, but for some reason I always thought Handsome Furs, one of my fave indie bands, were from Toronto. I just learned they are actually from Montreal! Oops!

Anyway, the synth-rock husband and wife duo are back with their third album Sound Kapital, and this time, their fusion of electronic and punk music has segued into a more New-Wave vibe. According to the press release, the album was influenced by Eastern European electronic and industrial music from the 80s. Which means, I love it.

And I especially love the naughty NSFW video for the lead single "What About Us", which features Dan and Alexei cruising around, picking up prostitutes and having all sorts of sex games in hotels and in the woods. Lots of boobs, vag and even a penis!

Stars get physical

Canadian indie band Stars have released a video that takes irony to a whole other level.

I mean, "We Don't Want Your Body" has lyrics that features Torquil Campbell berating a woman for being a fake tramp, while Amy Millan sings counterpoint about not going after the guy for his body.

And, who better to deliver lines about being superficial than a group of bodybuilders, straight out of the soft-focus 80s era?

Take note, Katy and Gaga, this is how a proper 80s homage is done.
