Robyn kicks Coldplay's ass

Leave it up to Robyn to save a particularly boring and annoying Coldplay song.

She did a live cover of Coldplay's "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" at Radio 1 Live Lounge and, wow! She saved that song! Sparkling synths and a gradually building drumline almost makes me wish this was her orignal song, but somehow, this song sounds like it belongs to her.

Coldplay, you just got owned.

Bright Light Bright Light look for a disco moment

After impressing me with his song and video for "How To Make A Heart", I've been keeping an eye on Welsh act Rod Thomas, aka Bright Light Bright Light.

His latest single off his debut album Make Me Believe In Hope, "Disco Moment" is a throbbing dance track that anticipates the end of a troubled relationship. It's something that sounds like it's straight out of Robyn's songbook. In fact, no sooner had I dubbed him the "male Robyn", did I read aquote from NME calling him "the boy Robyn in all but name."

And that's a great thing in my books. Just the other night, my boyfriend and I were talking about how there aren't enough songs by males singers played during Pride festivities. It's usually all about the diva. And I think Bright Light Bright Light can help fulfill the lack of male dance artists quite nicely.

Rye Rye and Robyn make beautiful music together

Sometimes musical collaborations are nothing more than an industry gimmick. But, in a few instances, collaborations can be an example of a perfect symbiotic relationship for talented musicians.

Rye Rye is an up-and-coming MC from Baltimore who is a getting a lot of attention from critics and in-the-know music lovers. And, in preparation for her debut album Go! Pop! Bang!, she's proving her musical cred by not only getting Robyn to rework her hit "Be Mine!", but also turning the sad pop song into a slow R&B jam with a new narrative, named "Never Will Be Mine".

And what's in it for Robyn? Well, while she is an indie pop music darling and a gay icon, she isn't exactly getting any airplay on North American mainstream channels. Which is a huge tragedy. So, with Rye Rye moving on up in the States, this is a surefire way to get some exposure to the masses. Whether that translates to more North American fans remains to be seen.

Robyn pulls a flashdance

Sometimes, all you need for a captivating video is a camera, a few lights, a good dance routine and killer charisma.

And that's all Robyn needs for her latest video, "Call Your Girlfriend" where she plays the other woman coaxing her lover to break up with his girlfriend. Scandalous.

If only every illicit affair came with a cool dance break.

Under the Radar: Austra

Somewhere between Robyn and Florence + The Machine lies Austra, a Toronto trio who is gaining buzz for their debut LP Feel It Break.

Having studied opera, viola and piano as a child, lead singer Katie Stelmanis ditched it all once she saw a punk show and was exposed to the likes of Nine Inch Nails and The Knife. She wanted to start a band where opera and new wave would live in harmony.

Austra does just that. Bandmates Maya Postepski and Dorian Wolf provide the minimal electro sounds that Robyn would envy, while Katie's strong voice lends itself to the lush vocal styling of Florence Welch.

Carving out a new identity has probably been informed by the fact that Katie and Maya are gay, which Katie partially credits for affecting the type of music she makes.

Check out their odd, David Lynch-ian video for "Lose It" now. And check out their creepy, sexy, NSFW video for "Beat and the Pulse" here.

Under the Radar: Those Dancing Days

When Robyn mentions another band, I listen.

The other day she tweeted about Swedish rock act, Those Dancing Days, and I'm glad she did.

The 5-piece girl rockers sound like seasoned veterans, confidently mixing dance and metal elements to their distinct indie-rock sound. Listening to them, I'm reminded of the bold, yet unassuming, charisma of Joan Jett or Blondie.

Featured in NME and having opened for Belle & Sebastian, the girls are about to release their second album, Daydreams & Nightmares, from which the following video "Reaching Forward" comes from.

Check it out!

Robyn plays with Teddybears

The relationship between Robyn and Stockholm-based electro act, Teddybears, has been well documented.

Robyn covered their hit "Cobrastyle" on her 2005 comeback album, and one of the Teddybears, Klas Åhlund, has written some of Robyn's biggest hits, including "Hang With Me" and "Indestructible".

So, it's only fitting that she would be the featured vocalist on "Cardiac Arrest", the lead single from the Teddybears' new album, Devil's Music.

They've released one of those trendy lyrics video as a preview before the real video comes out, so give it a listen. I'm loving the 80s vibe to the song.

Savage Skulls makes a bad gal out of Robyn

If you bought Robyn's Body Talk series on iTunes, you should have received "Bad Gal", her collaboration with Savage Skulls and Douster, as a bonus track.

And now the Swedish duo has made a video for the dance track, which features Robyn.

It also features a car chase by Mexican wrestlers, some creepy gourmet chef, and a strange tennis match.

I have no idea what is going on or what any of this is supposed to mean. But, it's strange and fun and definitely worth a watch.

Us gays are so easy to please

Here comes an amazing mashup!

We've got Robyn's "Dancing On My Own" battling Whitney's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" over the music of La Roux's "Bulletproof", with a random Taylor Swift verse thrown in.

You know, Taylor Swift wouldn't be so bad as a dance artist.

And the best thing about this song is that they didn't use La Roux's vocals. I can't stand her voice. She sounds like an owl in heat.
